The fill that never happened...

So November 16th I got my first fill. 2 CC for a total of 3. At first I was super restricted… I had to be really careful to chew everything etc. All of the sudden I am loosey goosey. I feel even less restricted now then I was after surgery. Last night I was eating a steak my roommate cooked for dinner… and I was like wait a minute, I just ate a steak with no problem whatsoever. I also find myself hungry all the time. What happened? I want my restriction back. I don’t have another fill for two weeks. I guess its time to learn if I can actually avoid temptation. So far so good.

I had my first final last night… I think I aced it! Woo hoo! One down two to go!

So one more thing. I have been cleared to work out finally! But I am kind of scared that I am going to hurt my port... did anyone feel this way? What kind of exercise did you start out with? Did you start slowly or jump right in?

  1. I'm not sure what you consider restriction to be, but it's about food intake, not literally FEELING tight or PBing when you don't chew super vigilantly. Just try to eat slowly, take at least 20-30 minutes to eat. Don't try for longer than that, because you'll just be grazing!

I know you said you were hungry, so obviously you are lacking restriction, just remember with the proper restriction you WILL still be able to eat steak. Just not a ton of it. Why would you ever not want to eat it? Yummy cow muscles.

That being said, remember you only have 3 cc's. Keep to bandster basics, don't revert to old habits and you'll be fine. In the grand scheme of things, 2 weeks is absolutely no time to wait for another fill.

Also, you're not going to injure yourself. Get on the elliptical for 30 minutes to an hour and just work it out the best you can for now, since that won't be so hard on your knees. Do ab exercises. Do whatever you're comfortable with. Just do it, your port is sewn in place. You gave it 6 weeks, you're fine! lol

  2. I agree with Ronnie. Restriction does not make you not be hungry from head hunger, nor does it make the decision on what you can eat most of the time. You have control over these things NOT your band.

Eating steak is not bad at all, as long as you are eating according to the band rules. 2 ounces of protein and 1 ounce of vegetables. Those are the rules my Surgeon set forth for us.

Now with that, there are some who have trouble, because they do not chew enough, or they take longer to eat. If you are still eating after 30 minutes put the fork down and walk away, because you are taking to long to eat. Only eat til you feel no longer hungry, DO NOT eat til you feel full!!!!!!!!

This is a learning process, and what works for me may not work for you! Our bands are not the same, I have a 4cc Allergen LapBand one of the original bands not the big ones they have now.

I will tell you that if you doubt restriction, you can do a pouch test. Get cottage cheese and eat 4 ounces. You should feel full, they told us to do this to see how much our pouch could hold, normally it is between 4 and 6 ounces for most banded individuals.

If you feel full at 4 then STOP and never eat over 4 ounces. This is what your body can take. Then you do not stretch or dilate your pouch.

Fills are important but I believe people rely too heavily on them at times, to take away all the work that you must put into your band.

It is a tool, you have to move, and work out, and eat the right foods for it to do it's job properly. If you eat slider foods that pass right through the band as I did when I regained my weight, because I was too tight, then you are defeating the purpose of this band.

The band was designed for us to eat SOLID protein first and some veggies second and to be satisfied by this amount of food and type.

    I hope this helps.

    Congratulations on the Finals :)

  3. I hear you on the restriction front... I have 3 ccs and have zero restriction... My next fill is on December 7th I'm hoping it will tighten me up....

The only fear I had of my port was sleeping on my stomach... they nurse told me to go on with my life as normal and when I do something to upset my port I will know it.... I haven't had any trouble walking or doing sit ups or anything else.

    Great job on the finals!!!

  4. Even at my tightest, I can pretty much always eat steak as long as I go slow. (Pork and hamburgers are a different story.) As far as the hunger, it happens. Just have a small and healthy/low calorie/high protein snack.
